St. George Orthodox Church has one of the more impressive church edifices in the Norwood area. This church in the heart of South Norwood traces its roots to Syrian immigrants who arrived in South Norwood in the early twentieth century. One of the primary tasks of these settlers was to establish an Orthodox church, the faith of their homeland. St. George embraces the faith and works hard to preserve the culture and closeness which have been a part of this parish from the beginning. As a parish, this church is committed to serving the community by working with the Norwood Food Pantry.
The Greek Orthodox Church is a Christian denomination within the greater Orthodox Church, which is the world's second largest organized Christian body after the Roman Catholic Church.
In Somerville, the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church proudly notes its immigrant history. Founded in 1916 (originally on Bow St.), the church was formed by Greek immigrants who came to work in Somerville's meatpacking plants. They settled in the Brickbottom area of Somerville (which was a close-knit neighborhood before being razed for City and factory use) and they worshipped at Dormition—all while making their way in a new land.
Today, the Church draws members from throughout Greater Boston. A very active, very Greek and very warm community, they are led by Rev. Fr. Panteleimon Klostri. The congregation pursues charitable work, offers numerous youth programs including Greek School and Church School and maintains an all-ages choir. In addition, a Golden Club brings together members over 50 to socialize and undertake charitable work, and a Health Committee organizes exercise classes and health talks. Their annual Greek Festival, held the second weekend of September, draws members and neighbors, as well as foodies looking to sample the homemade Greek treats like grilled kebabs, spanikopita (spinach pies) and sweet baklava.
The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America states that, "Orthodoxy believes that God has revealed Himself to us, most especially in the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom we know as the Son of God. This Revelation of God, His love, and His purpose, is constantly made manifest and contemporary in the life of the Church by the power of the Holy Spirit."
St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church has been in Weston since 1959. More than 700 families currently belong to the church. Services are open to all. Visitors are invited to introduce themselves to Father Alex or Father Nick after the Liturgy.
This Greek Orthodox church is at the intersection of Central, Cashman and Prospect streets, and provides weekly wroship services as well as community activities and programs including Greek language courses and various ministries. The church is beautifully decorated with traditional religious painting, and bench monuments honor various Greek families around the building.
Saints Vartanantz Armenian Church is the church of the Chelmsford Armenian community. Pastor Rev. Father Khachatur Kesablyan serves the congregation, always welcoming new members. Various community events are offered at the church such as Armenian dance classes.
St. Nicholas Orthodox Church is a small, but intimate group of people who open their arms and welcome newcomers. The church has a rich history spanning more than 50 years. Through its outreach program, the church runs an Orthodox Food Center, an emergency food pantry, as well as supporting the Holy Trinity Eastern Orthodox Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Shaint Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church has served the growing Greek community of Peabody since the turn of the last century. In 1923, it opened its current house of worship on Paleologos Street. A large school is attached to the church, a sign of its ongoing commitment to education. This active community also sponsors a soup kitchen and food pantry, shelter and transitional housing for homeless people, choir, mens club and play groups for young children.
St. George Orthodox Church is tucked away in a residential neighborhood. The Church School has classes for students from preschool age to high school seniors. The Adult Fellowship program brings parishioners together to provide outreach to other ministries. There is also a monthly book club within the fellowship program. Archpriest Timothy Ferguson is the current pastor.
This Antiochian Orthodox Christian community celebrated its first centenary in 2007. Now in its second century, it is still going strong and maintains the traditions that have bound its members and is pursuing active ministries. The church maintains a school, supports a choir and provides an organization for youth and for parents.
Saint Gregory's Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church is located next to the Sovereign Bank on Main Street. They have masses every Sunday and regularly throughout the week. Parishoners have the opportunity to be a part of the Memorial Garden Patio where they can purchase a brick to personalize in remembrance of a love one. Prayers can also be requested for Sunday mass.
The gorgeous St. George Greek Orthodox Church is the only Greek Orthodox church on Cape Cod, welcoming all Eastern Orthodox believers to worship. St. George offers Sunday service as well as Sunday school for children age 3 to grade 8. There are high school discussion groups held twice a month, and all times are posted on the website events calendar. The enormous halls are the perfect location to rent for large private functions such as weddings and parties. The church was built in 1980 and in 2005 the interior was repainted by hand in order to maintain the antique feel and beauty that it continues to bestow upon all who enter.
