The Environmental Health Division, governed by the County of Ventura in California, protects the public health and environment by ensuring conformance with state laws and county ordinances. It offers food protection, hazardous material, individual sewage disposal system, land use, medical waste, ocean water quality monitoring and recreational health programs. The division conducts routine inspections and investigations. The Environmental Health Division also organizes workshops and seminars. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department substation provides police protection to Marina del Rey residents and operates a boat patrol. The station formerly was the Marina del Rey Harbor Patrol, but the Sheriff's Department took over operations in 1984. The substation has a jail and a back dock is home to offshore and close-to-shore patrol boats. The station is also responsible for patrol in three unincorporated areas that stretch for about a mile inland.
