Stroud Preserve is creeks and ponds, fields and meadows and woodlands as far as the eye can see. While the public is welcome, this 574-acre preserve is privately owned. The land is used for research, education and wildlife preservation. Birding, walking and horseback riding is encouraged at Stroud. There are nearly nine miles of unpaved trails. It has fields of soybeans, corn and hay, birds such as the downy or red-bellied woodpecker or the tufted titmouse, and trees like red oaks and maples. Dogs on leashes are welcome.
Home to the stunning Holiday Luminaria in mid-December and the boisterous Canal Day in June, Schuylkill Canal Park offers history woven with entertainment and nature. Constructed in 1846, the lock reopened in 2005. Canoers and kayakers can paddle a five-mile loop in Port Providence, and walking trails abound on the site.
