In 1929, Sanitary Service Company opened with five employees and more than 500 customers. The company now employs more than 75 people and serves nearly 35,000 commercial and residential customers in Bellingham, Ferndale, Birch Bay and the majority of Whatcom County in Washington. The company was originally City Sanitary Service and collected garbage from local residents and businesses by horse and wagon. Locally owned and operated, Sanitary Service Company and its subsidiary, Recycling Services, is one of Whatcom Countys largest full-service recycling and waste collection companies. SSC provides a line of prompt and dependable waste collection services, recycling collection services and special services for residential, multifamily and commercial customers.
