Incorporated in 1919, the American Legion is one of the nation s largest veterans service organizations, focused on mentoring/sponsoring youth programs in communities, advocating patriotism and promoting national security. It operates a number of programs, including Child Welfare Foundation, Legion Racing, Heroes to Hometowns and Legion college/riders. In addition, the organization conducts various activities, such as oratorical contests, shooting sports, scouting and conventions/meetings. VFW George R. Wolff Post 425 was one of the organization's earliest posts, forming in 1920, just after World War I. It is named in honor of the first man from Hopkins to die in that war. The post is also among the largest in the metro area; including its ladies' auxiliary, it has more 900 members on its rolls. The post offers food, drinks, pull tabs, bingo and, of course, a place for vets to gather and share their stories.
