For more than 30 years, the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago (HTGC), also known as the Rama Temple, has been serving thousands of Hindu families in the Chicagoland area. Located near the Des Plaines River Valley, the complex consists of two temples: the Rama temple and Ganesha-Shiva-Durga temple, both of which were constructed by artisans and builders from India.
The HTGC offers priest services by appointment, but is open for worship Monday - Friday, 9am - 9pm. The temple holds monthly classes and special events, such as yoga and meditation, music festivals and Sunday School for children. It is also open to people outside the Hindu religion. The architecture and rich cultural experience make it a must-see destination in Lemont. Groups of five or more can schedule tours from 10am to 11:30am by calling 630-972-0300.
The Hindu Temple of St. Louis started in 1991, and the temple itself had its formal inauguration in July of 1998. This amazing building with it's intricate carvings was built by sculptors and artisans in the style of the Chola Dynasty (a 10th Century Hindu King). The images on the temple are made of black granite, white marble or Panchalohas (five materials combined: gold, silver, copper, bronze and brass). Inside the Temple you are able to visit Hindu Gods/Goddesses in their respective shrines while practicing traditional Hindu rituals.
