Whittier Neighborhood The Whittier Neighborhood, named for the poet John Greenleaf Whittier, is located one mile south of downtown Minneapolis. Whittier is bounded by Franklin Avenue to the north, Interstate 35W to the east, Lyndale Avenue South to the west and Lake Street to the south. Whittiers modern history began in 1849 and part of Whittier is designated as the Washburn Fair Oaks Historic District. Whittier today is well known for food and arts. Some popular destinations and restaurants in the Twin Cities region are here, including: Eat Street, Lyn-Lake, Jungle Theater, Childrens Theatre Company, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. What is Whittier Alliance The Whittier Alliance was formed by a small coalition of Whittier residents, businesses, agencies and religious institutions in January 1977. The Alliance is a 501 ( C ) and is the officially recognized citizen-participation neighborhood organization. As in its formative years, the Alliance continues to depend on the civic involvement of neighborhood volunteers. It is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors elected by the Whittier residents and businesses, and daily operations are performed by the Executive Director, Community Organizer and a part-time administrative assistant. City-wide, the Whittier Alliance is respected for its ability to mobilize residents, businesses and organizations to voice their opinions and concerns in a manner that encourages collaboration and creative outcomes. Today, the Alliance continues to operate as a coalition of Whittier neighborhood individuals, families, businesses, and institutions working together for the advancement and development of the Whittier community. The Alliance advocates for the Whittier neighborhood to express Whittiers goals and dreams and to address neighborhood needs and concerns. Only residents and businesses registered in the neighborhood can become a voting member at the committees. Mission: The Mission of the Whittier Alliance is to ensure safety and livability by facilitating, advocating and leading the diverse voices of Whittier Neighborhood Vision: The Vision of the Whittier Alliance is to mobilize the human and financial resources, information, and technical assistance necessary to effectively provide leadership to organize and implement a base of operation for citizen participation. Objective: The Objective of the Whittier Alliance is to empower and celebrate stability, diversity, economic development, education and concern for all the children, youth, individuals and families in Whittier Neighborhood What is the Alliance doing? The Whittier Alliance is a neighborhood resource. The Alliance responds to business and resident inquiries and facilitates meetings to inform the neighborhood about changes, developments, safety issues, neighborhood funds for property improvements, events, etc. that impact the livability and prosperity of the Whittier neighborhood. Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association mission is to sustain a strong south Minneapolis community. Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association was formed in 1982 to strengthen this inner-city, south Minneapolis neighborhood bounded by Lake Street, Cedar Avenue, 38th Street and Chicago Avenue by building connections among the neighborhoods members ( residents, property owners, employees and businesses ) and working to support their collective efforts to address community concerns. From offering restorative justice programming and creating community development plans to connecting businesses with support services and collaborating with other neighborhoods, our activities strengthen the commitment to civic involvement in the community. PPNAs top priorities as identified by our Board are to: PPNA is a volunteer-based, fiscally sound, results oriented, private non-profit corporation. A volunteer Board of Directors ( elected to two-year terms by members of the neighborhood ) guides PPNA and the work of its Program Committees. These Committees focus on priority issues that have been identified at neighborhood meetings: Staff support is also provided to the Powderhorn Art Fair Committee. PPNA meetings are open to all interested parties. We have strong membership support, generally raising about $100, 000 per year from our membership, event income and fee-for-service activities.

Founded in 1960, Hospitality House Youth Directions focuses on the emotional, spiritual, physical and intellectual development, as well as social integration of youths between the ages of 6 and 18. It administers various educational, vocational, athletic, outreach and recreational programs. The organization encourages participation in Bible studies, discipleship groups and other religion-oriented programs. Today’s world faces many terrible problems. Human trafficking and child exploitation are a harsh reality for some people. In order to address this growing problem, The GOD’S CHILD Project was founded in 1991. This nonprofit organization is a humanitarian aid organization dedicated to “breaking the chains of poverty through education and formation.” The organization has been providing humanitarian aid in over 12 programs in five countries across the world. For 5,000 poverty-stricken children, including those abandoned or orphaned, The GOD’S CHILD Project provides care and education. The project also provides health and community-based services for about 8,700 widowed, abandoned, and single mothers and their children. Serving in Guatemala, El Salvador, Malawi, and India, The GOD’S CHILD Project helps provide child sponsorship for these regions in which child poverty is a growing issue.
