Suffolk County Handicapped Services is dedicated to aiding and assisting residents with mental or physical disabilities. There are approximately 283,000 individuals living with disabilities in Suffolk County. As such, this office serves as a center of information, assistance and county enforcement of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The Weights and Measures Bureau is a subdivision of the Suffolk County's Department of Consumer Affairs. It oversees the testing and inspection of all weight and measurement devices used for commerical purposes in addition to checking pre-packaged goods for compliance (e.g. scales in supermarkets, deli scales, butcher shops, laundromats, gasoline bumps and fuel oil meters). Consumers who believe they may have been cheated on the amount they paid for by a retailer can contact this agency to investigate the matter.
In addition, the Weights and Measures Bureau issues licenses for all precious metal dealers and registers gas stations for business.
Sheriff Donald Blaine Smith heads the Putnam County Sheriff's Department, which consists of one undersheriff, three captains, one chief investigator and 85 officers. The department features a marine unit, a narcotics enforcement unit, a civil bureau, a school resource officer and additional specialized units. The department's territory is county-wide, so at times it works with the State Police or different village police departments. Residents can visit the office to report crimes, incidents and domestic abuse or to inquire about pistol permits. The Sheriff's Department is attached to the Correctional Facility, which employs 57 correction officers.
