Marietta City Schools educates about 8,000 students with the City of Marietta in eight elementary schools, a sixth-grade academy, a middle schools and a high school. The school system and its schools have earned numerous awards and honors. Four schools have earned designation as a Georgia School of Excellence with one earning one as a National School of Excellence. The system is also an International Baccalaureate World School district, one of few offering the challenging curriculum from kindergarten through high school. The school district is one of Cobb County's largest employers with about 1,200 faculty, staff and other personnel. A seven-member Board of Education, elected by ward every four years, approve policy and direction of the school district. For day-to-day operations, the board appoints a school superintendent.
A Georgia School of Excellence in 2008, Timber Ridge Elementary, which opened in 1990, sports a motto of "Learning, Caring and Sharing." The work of the Timber Ridge Foundation focuses on supporting programs in science and technology, the arts and teacher curriculum grants.
Lockheed Elementary is a K-5 school in the northeast part of Marietta that educates about 800 students with the goal of fostering leadership.
Lockheed uses the Leadership Academy program, which fosters opportunities for students to develop their leadership skills through digital literacy, inventive thinking, effective communication and high productivity.
Gabe Carmona serves as principal for this school.
Legacy Pointe Academy provides a comprehensive curriculum for Marietta children. The school's curriculum is comprised of elementary education in various academic and arts subjects. Students are encouraged to engage their curiosities and teachers aim to foster a young community of independent explorers.
