Boys and Girls High School (BGHS) is a public high school in Brooklyn, serving students in grades 9 through 12. The principal is Bernard Gassaway.
With an enrollment of 2,225 students, Boys and Girls High School is one of the largest high schools in Brooklyn and is the largest high school in Bedford Stuyvesant. BGHS is a well-known and beloved school in the community, referring to itself as "The Pride and Joy of Bed-Stuy." It is known for its active PTA, more than 30 student organizations and numerous sports teams. The school's sprawling track and football field and winning basketball and football teams have earned it national publicity, attracting regular coverage by The New York Daily News and ESPN.
BGHS offers free tutoring by professionals in their field, along with free workshops on financial and computer literacy for parents.
The Brooklyn Brownstone School was founded in 2008 by a group of local parents concerned about their children's education. The planning team of parents included as partners the Stuyvesant Heights Parents Association, The Brooklyn Children's Museum and Children for Children. Brooklyn Brownstone is a public school serving grades PK-5. The school's principal is Nakia Haskins.
Brooklyn Brownstone has a focus on service learning-- academic excellence with an eye towards community service. The school encourages looping, a method that allows teachers and students to spend three years together to foster tightly knit family units within the larger school community.
Brooklyn Brownstone occupies the fourth floor of a campus it shares with M.S. 35., located on the first, second and third floors.
Community Partnership Charter School is a neighborhood school open to all students who are eligible to enroll in New York City public schools. There are no financial or academic requirements for admission, and the school offers a rigorous academic program that helps students explore and develop their own special talents. The curriculum includes reading, writing, math, science, social studies, music, movement, physical education, technology, Spanish and art. La Cima is a public charter school that occupies the third floor of a large, four-story school building on the corner of Gates and Stuyvesant Avenues. The school shares the building with another charter school, BSS Charter, on the fourth floor and one middle school, M.S. 267, on the first and second floors.
The school opened in 2008 to 140 kindergarteners and first graders. In the 2010 school year, the school enrolled 273 students. La Cima Charter will continue to add a grade until it is fully enrolled as a K - 5 school in the 2012 school year.
The school does not screen its students. It gives geographic priority to students who live in the community school district and includes an application lottery.
