St. Michael Parish School is Wheaton's only Catholic elementary school and is located on the same property as St. Michael Church. It hosts students from Wheaton, Winfield, Carol Stream, Lisle, Glen Ellyn, West Chicago and Warrenville for kindergarten and/or preschool up to 8th grade.
St. Michael's history dates back to 1879, when construction on the Wheaton Catholic Church was finalized. In 1911, the church was severely burned, and in 1923, the oldest section of the present building was completed. In 1974, the Sisters of Notre Dame from Toledo, Ohio, came to be a part of St. Michael School's staff. Construction on the office area, gym and parish center was completed in 1985.
Opened in 1968, expanded in 1997 and again in 2000, the Sandburg Elementary campus occupies nine acres and is one of 13 District 200 elementary schools.
