Since 1880, St. Edward Catholic Church has been home to Newark's Catholic population. The church was part of the Mission San Jose and later the Mission Holy Spirit until 1920 when it became St. Edward Catholic Church. The Church offers masses in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Latin. The church shares its space with St. Edward's Catholic School. St. Edward Catholic Church has 52 organizations that support its diverse population, including societies for its Filipino, Spanish and Portuguese-speaking members.
Built in the 1950s, the First Baptist Church in San Carlos has an intimate congregation of less than 100. Surrounded by neatly manicured lawns and large oak trees, the church regularly rents out the facility for both American and Spanish congregations, as well as to Catholic charities, who have held adult day services for more than 30 years. The church provides Sunday School for youth groups and mass for all comers every Sunday at 11 a.m.
Located in historic Filipinotown, Our Lady of Loretto is a part of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. It serves the very large Philipino area residents and are very involved in the community. The University Lutheran Church is the primary facility for the Stanford Episcopal and Lutheran community. The Episcopal Lutheran Campus Ministry (ELCM), comprised of Stanford undergraduate and graduate students, commonly uses this church for worship as well as non-faith based activities. More commonly known as "UniChu," the church is the hub of a community committed to social justice and hospitality to strangers. A ministry of Episcopal and Lutheran churches, the community welcomes people of all (or no) faiths.
The organization also meets in the CIRCLE Common Room at Stanford University. The gathering includes dinner, conversation and prayer. Other activities include Bible study, current event discussion, games and movies.
The church also houses the Amigos de Palo Alto program, a Spanish Immersion preschool housed at, but not affiliated with, the University Church. Christ Presbyterian Church is a religious organization located on Centella Street in Carlsbad. Valley Community Church is a non-denominational Christian church led by Senior Pastor Danny Hall. The church offers two worship services on Sunday mornings, one at 9 a.m. and the other at 10:45 a.m., as well as children's Sunday school and youth services. The church provides many opportunities for the members of it's congregation to stay connected, including small group Bible study, men's and women's ministries, the TNT middle school group, the VISION high school group and the New Vision Counseling Ministry. The St. John Fisher Catholic Church features a chapel, a beautiful garden and a large school. Located at the corner of Crenshaw Boulevard and Crest Road, the parish is composed of more than 3,000 families from throughout the area. The pastor of St. John Fisher is the Rev. Msgr. David A. Sork.
Mission Hills Church believes in love, worship and connection as the main principles of following Jesus. The church offers bible study, adult Sunday school, youth groups, men's bible study and various ministries. The church believes in personalizing services and studies to specific groups in hopes of creating a stronger connection with the meetings. The church is also involved in various community fundraisers such as Create-a-Crate, which encourages teachers to provide school supplies cut from current budge restraints. All Souls Episcopal welcomes all races, colors, creeds and sexual preferences. Our Lady of Grace School is located in a residential neighborhood on Somerset Avenue, where you can often hear the sound of children playing long after school has been released. Ryan Brusco is the principal of the school, which teaches students in Kindergarten through the 8th grade.
The main building was constructed in 1955 and houses eight regular classrooms, the technology center and the library. The gym is used for dance, drama and, on rainy days, physical education classes. The playground, which features a large grassy area, ball courts and play structures, shares space with the parish parking lot. The school's office is located around the corner on Somerset Ave.
Saint Clare Catholic Church is led by Pastor Steven Foppiano, Vicar Artur Najera, Deacon Carl Kube and Deacon Richard Driggs. Church ministries include altar services, arts, Bible study, children's liturgy, circle of friends, communion for shut-ins, forever young, Knights of Columbus, and the library. Music is an important part of Mass services; there are five choir groups, including youth choir. There are Vacation Bible School, Bible study groups, and many youth programs available.
