Opened in 1981 by artist and framer, John Kasbohm, Atelier 564 is an art gallery and framing shop. The frames pay the bills, but it's the art that Kasbohm loves. A simultaneously bold and retiring personality, Kasbohm engages clients in a gently authoritative manner, inspiring confidence and trust with only a glance and a few words. Admittedly an artist not a businessman, Kasbohm is doing what many businessmen have not been able to do: hang on. John, himself, is worth a visit, the frames are a feature and the art is a loss leader! Warning, call ahead, he keeps approximate hours -- about noon to eight, Monday through Saturday.
Though the Back Bay Framery has changed addresses a few times, it has always been on Newbury Street during its 15 years in business, and it now sits back in its original location. Specializing in custom framing, they do conservation framing, meaning they only use acid-free and UV-protected materials to ensure a long life for your pictures. But don't think they're limited to just photos and paintings; one of their most challenging projects to date was framing a studded holster belt once belonging to Roy Rogers. You name it -- they frame it. Also, don't forget to check out their ready-made photo frames and artwork for sale.
