Where do Sharon residents walk their dogs? They visit the former "Old Corral" section of Deborah Simpson Park, between Cedar and Gunhouse streets. The Friends of the Sharon Dog Park operate the privately-funded park, and the rules are posted.
Longwood Mall is home to several European beech trees planted in the 1800s by David Sears, a wealthy Bostonian who also created Mason, Winthrop and Kynvet squares and gave the Longwood neighborhood its name. The park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
One of the South End's most diverse and well-used parks, Peters Park offers basketball, tennis and handball courts, a baseball diamond, two dog parks and a playground, all surrounded by grassy fields, gardens and a dramatic outdoor sculpture.
The park's two off-leash dog runs have become a destination for South End dog walkers and owners. Both are gated and have access to running water and shaded benches. For toddlers, the park's tot lot features slides, swings and a jungle gym atop a soft surface. The athletic fields and courts at Peters Park are used by many neighborhood sporting groups including South End Baseball.
Public art also has a presence at Peters Park: A colorful mural is painted on the tennis court wall and a newly constructed sculpture entitled "Landwave" separates the baseball field from Washington Street.
One of the Navy's oldest shipbuilding facilities, Charlestown Navy Yard is a must visit for anyone with an interest in American history. The shipyard is located at the north end of the Freedom Trail. Both the famous USS Constitution and WWI's USS Cassin Young are berthed at the shipyard and open for tour. The yard is maintained by the U.S. National Park Service and houses a Visitor's Center and gift shop.
Hunnewell Park is one of Newton's many city parks. It features 4.6 acres of green, a playground, a softball field, a soccer/ lacrosse field and a dog recreation area.
The Dr. Walter A. Griffin Playground, also referred to as the Walter Griffin Playground and the Ames Street Fields, is a public park operated by the city's recreation department. It features a variety of facilities including a playground, basketball court, picnic areas and baseball and softball diamonds.
Thompson Square provides residents and visitors a place to catch their breath in the middle of a hectic intersection along Main Street. It's a small park that pays homage to what once was a bustling corner of commerce for historic Charlestown, but is now a spot where dog owners can take a break with their pets or for neighbors to stop and say hello to each other. From the park, you can get a good look of One Thompson Square, a Victorian Gothic structure built in 1875 just after Charlestown ceased to be an independent city and became part of Boston.
