RISE Academy is a TEAM School, part of a network run by KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) in Newark. Serving African-American and Latino students in low-income communities, the school aims to prove that students of all backgrounds can succeed academically. Some 85 percent of the students qualify for free or subsidized school lunches and 14 percent have special needs. The school prides itself on working with students who start out below grade level in reading and math, but after a few years are achieving at above-average levels compared to their peers in Newark and across New Jersey. Ninety percent of the students go on to college.
Part of the Archdiocese of Newark, St Michael's Grammar School seeks to integrate the educational and religious needs of students in an atmosphere steeped in Catholic values. It aims to help children realize their full potential, through a collaboration of family, school and church.
Established in 1999, Maria L Varisco-Rogers Charter School provides instruction for children in grades three through eight. It offers a range of academic programs in language arts, social studies, science and math. Anne Heyward is the principal.
McKinley Elementary School serves grades Pre-K to 8 in the Newark Public School District. It is headed by Principal Carolyn Granato and holds just over 900 students.
George Washington Carver Elementary School is led by principal Winston Jackson. The school has 729 students and classes from grades K-8. The classes include computers, world language, a literacy program and a gifted and talented program in addition to the regular curriculum. There also are several clubs and after-school activities.
