Established in 1930, the Federal Bureau of Prisons protects society by confining offenders in prisons and community-based facilities that provide work and other self-improvement opportunities. The bureau is comprised of more than 115 institutions, over five regional offices and nearly 25 staff training and 28 community correction centers. The Federal Bureau of Prisons is responsible for the custody and care of more than 204,000 federal offenders. The bureau maintains a work force of more than 36,000 employees. The Federal Bureau of Prisons also maintains several residential reentry centers that provide a range of employment counseling, job placement and financial management assistance services.
