Founded in 2002, Goose Creek Adventure Learning, Inc is a non-profit 501c ( 4 ), which is governed by a board of directors and assisted by a variety of volunteers ranging from college students and professors to others including a doctor, an engineer, and retired military personnel, all who are interested in outdoor leadership and environmental education. Unlike 501c ( 3 ) non-profits, Goose Creek Adventure Learning, Inc is not currently eligible for grant or donor funding. We do not solicit donations or grants and thus must charge for our services. All proceeds earned from fees paid by groups are reinvested back into the property to pay for insurance, equipment purchases and maintenance, supplies, gas, food, and utilities. Except for out of pocket expenses, volunteers are not paid. With our boards approval and a change in our current mission, Goose Creek Adventure Learning, Inc is in the discussion phase of seeking 501c ( 3 ) status with the IRS ; thus, becoming eligible for grants and fund-raising possibly in the future. The founder and president of Goose Creek Adventure Learning, Inc is Dr. Stewart W. Husted. Many know him as Colonel Husted, a retired ( 2009 ) professor at the Virginia Military Institute and Lt. Colonel ( Vietnam veteran ) in the US Army Reserve. While in the USAR, he held positions with the Army Command and Staff College and West Point. Husted is also a former business school dean ( 8 years ), who recently retired from the Virginia Military Institute ( VMI ) as the John and Jane Roberts Chair in Free Enterprise. He taught business leadership and marketing courses at VMI. Dr. Husteds 2006 book: George C. Marshall: Rubrics of Leadership was published by the Army War College Foundation and is available through Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble. Royalties earned from the book are donated to the Fisher House Foundation to support wounded veterans and their families. His latest book, The Hard Corps: 21st Century Leadership, was published in 2009 and has been mandatory reading for VMI Rats. In addition, Dr. Husted has co-authored 4 ( plus revised editions ) business and marketing texts and was interviewed on a 2007 NPR radio program. He was also featured in an interview about leadership in the May-June 2007 issue of WW II magazine. Dr. Stewart W. Husted, president of Goose Creek Adventure Learning, Inc
