In 1996, a group of corporate leaders, elected officials and concerned citizens banded together with area property owners to create Mississippis first Business Improvement District. Like over 1, 500 similar organizations nationwide, the Downtown Jackson Business Improvement District committed itself to changing both the aesthetic and economic environment in the existing, urbanized community. Managed by Downtown Jackson Partners, the district embraced the mission of becoming clean, safe and bustling. Today there is a renewed sense of pride in Downtown Jackson. Crime rates have never been lower, occupancy rates have never been higher and over $2 billion in economic development projects are planned or underway in the heart of this city. Over twenty annual events and over thirty restaurants now call Downtown home. We are pleased that the efforts of this organization have helped to evoke a new era of confidence and opportunity. Downtown Jackson Partners moves forward, we are ready to lead this district in yet another, even more exciting direction. Residential growth must be a priority for the City of Jackson. An identifiable sense of place must be established in our capital city. Cleanliness and safety, employee traffic and special events must now begin to translate into the creation of a true 24-hour neighborhood.
