Since 1950, parishioners have been coming to this beautiful Russian Orthodox church at the corner of Essex and Adeline. The history of Orthodox preaching in Berkeley dates back almost a century, when this church was founded in 1920. Now conveniently located near the Ashby BART station, the church holds services several times a week in both English and Slavonic.
The Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute is the center of Orthodox Christianity in Berkeley and on the West Coast. It offers a two-year program resulting in a Master of Arts in Orthodox Christian Studies, on-going lecture series and symposium, a campus ministry for UC Berkeley students and a publishing press.
