Sav-A-Lot entered the grocery store business in 1977 and the Kent market in 2009. The discount grocer sells basic selections in virtually all grocery categories including meat, produce, frozen items and health and beauty items.
The chain does not offer as deep a selection in each category as full-priced grocery stores. (For example, fish but no fresh lobster; yogurt but only two brands.)
Savings over the full-service grocery stores can be substantial, but shoppers are smart to read labels and look for trade-offs. Beef, for example, is only 80 percent lean; few if any reduced-sodium options are available. Customers should bring their own bags (or expect to pay a nominal fee for bags) and pack up their own purchases.
