Fairfax County's fire and rescue department, Station 38, is also the headquarters of Emergency Medical Services' 3rd battalion. The station houses an engine with a hose and water to extinguish fires, a truck with a ladder and an ambulance. Station 38 also has a light and air unit.
Proudly known as "The Pride of the Highway," Station No. 11, tucked just off Richmond Highway, has four trucks—an engine, a heavy rescue, a ladder and a brush—and two ambulances. The Pride of the Highway is one of only four stations in the county equipped to respond to hazardous material incidents.
Fairfax County maintains 41 fire stations throughout the county - this one opened in 2007, making it number 41. It is one of two in Fairfax Station and keeps ten professional firefighters on duty at all times; these are members of a staff estimated to be about 30 people in total. The staff of men and women are equipped and trained to deal with emergencies in the local and surrounding communities. In addition to fighting fires and providing emergency medical assistance, firefighters show residents how to safely install child seats, set-up and use smoke detectors and conduct home safety checks. The department is part of the Northern Virginia regional response system along with the City of Alexandria, Arlington County, the City of Fairfax, Prince William County, Loudoun County, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, Fort Belvoir and Fort Meyer.
The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department is made up of more than 1,300 professional and volunteer staffers at 37 fire stations and offices throughout the county.
Led by Chief Ronald Mastin, the department provides fire suppression, emergency medical, technical rescue, hazardous materials, water rescue, life safety education, fire prevention and arson investigation services for just over 1 million residents in 395 square miles of county area.
