One of the busiest of Baltimore County's 33 volunteer fire companies, the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department provides fire, rescue and emergency medical services to Arbutus and its surrounding communities. AVFD is one of only two stations in the county, with two Advanced Life Support-equipped ambulances. Swift water rescue has been been part of the department's activities for more than a decade.
The AVFD firehall is an Arbutus institution, with a community center available for special events, regular record and CD meets that attract dealers and collectors from around the region and an annual carnival in July.
The Kensington Volunteer Fire Department was originally built in 1946, renovated in 1978 and then again in 2001 (but it still doesn't have a fire pole). KVFD Station 5 has more than 120 volunteers, with about 60 active volunteers. Two fire trucks and two ambulances (one for advanced life support and one for basic life support) are ready to go when an emergency is called in. The fire department is staffed from 6am to 6pm, Monday through Friday, by five career fire fighters and from 6pm to 6am and 24 hours on weekends by volunteers. "Riding Members" live at the fire house and serve a minimum of four shifts per week in exchange for their housing.

Pikesville Volunteer Fire Company is a full service community organization based on East Sudbrook Lane in Pikesville. The company works to protect the community and uses a wide range of apparatus and vehicles including heavy rescue vehicles, fire engines, tower vehicles and medic vehicles among others.

Providence Volunteer Fire Company is a 100% volunteer organization based on Providence Road, serving Towson and the surrounding areas. Led by Captain David Smith, the company was established more than 50 years ago and offers a wide range of services to the community, including fire suppression, rescue, collapse rescue and emergency medical services. The company has all types of equipment and vehicles to assist residents, including 2 Engines, a 109' ladder truck (with rescue tools), and a flood light service vehicle, among others.
The company also offers birthday party services for children in the community and provides a fire safety presentation, use of the fire hose, a tour of the station and souvenirs for the party goers. The Chevy Chase Fire Department primarily serves the area in Chevy Chase encompassing Bradley Boulevard to the south, Wisconsin Avenue to the west, Western Avenue to the southeast, Grubb Road to the east and Beach Drive to the north. In addition to an engine truck, the department also has a hazardous material unit.
