Open since 1962, the Stoughton District Court is located on Central Street beside the West Elementary School. There is a staff of about 50 at the court, including the presiding judge, the Honorable Richard D. Savignano, as well as three clerk magistrates. The court deals with criminal cases, as well as cases dealing with motor vehicle, civil, small claims and mental health issues. There is also a probation department.
The court serves the towns of Stoughton, Avon, Canton and Sharon. It is located less less than a mile from the Stoughton Commuter Rail station, making it easily accessible via public transportation.
The Malden Court House is located on Summer Street after the Pearl Street Station. It is a 10-to-15 minute walk from the Malden Center train station. The number 99 and 132 buses stop right in front of the courthouse. There is not a lot of parking in the area, but there are some 1-hour parking spots on the street. There is also a paid parking lot on the opposite corner.
The Malden Court House handles all local cases within the cities of Malden, Melrose, Everett, and Wakefield, including traffic and parking violations, custody hearings, and other minor civil cases. Cell phones, food, and drink are not permitted within the courthouse.
The Middlesex County Superior Court relocated to Woburn from Cambridge in March 2008. The newly-built 140,000-square-foot, seven-story building has 15 courtrooms with sound amplification abilities, 15 jury deliberation rooms and 22 holding cells. About 180 people are employed at the court. The court does not accept e-filing or filing by fax.
Peabody District Court is located in the heart of Peabody Square. Its Essex County jurisdiction covers Peabody and Lynnfield. Criminal, civil and small claims cases are heard here. The court also adjudicates motor vehicle-related cases and domestic violence cases.
Founded in 1978, the district trial court handles civil and criminal cases filed in the cities of Somerville and Medford. Among the types of cases heard are small claims, motor vehicle infractions, probation hearings and restraining orders. During fiscal year 2009, the Somerville District Court held proceedings for over 14,900 cases--or an average of 60 per business day.
