This bustling community center in the Elmwood section of West Hartford serves the entire town with a wide array of classes, leisure activities, trips and special events; it hosts a senior center as well. Elmwood's facilities include an auditorium, a full-sized gym, a billiards room, a dance studio, a pottery and ceramics studio, a library, a lounge, classrooms of various sizes and two kitchens. The facility is also available for rent for events ranging from weddings to business seminars.
The Waterford Community Center, located next to Waterford High School, houses both the town's senior service and recreation and park departments. The center is open to all Waterford residents and provides a game room, a banquet hall, a computer room and a fitness center. People can rent the banquet hall for Saturday afternoons and all day Sunday. All senior activities are held in the center, including the daily meals for seniors.
San Leandro's new Senior Community Center opened April 4. Most city classes and activities for seniors are now based in the building. Some privately-run activities, and classes held jointly with the San Leandro Adult School are also based here.
Activities and services include Tai Chi Chuan, fall prevention, ballroom dancing, blood pressure testing, social groups and reduced price lunches.
The public can rent the building or activity rooms in the evenings and on weekends. Room rental applications are available through the city's website.
The center also acts as the city's emergency operations center in the case of a major crisis.
The building is LEED Gold certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.
The Salvation Army South End Corps is the neighborhood's largest Salvation Army location, offering an after-school program, worship services and educational and recreational programs for youths and adults. The Washington Street building also houses the Family Services Bureau, which coordinates emergency assistance for individuals and families in need. A computer center and a gymnasium are onsite as well.
Plum Gar Community Recreation Center offers a wide range of classes, activities and programs for residents in the area. The location has numerous features, including a gymnasium area, kitchen, conference room and lounge area. Open gym memberships are available for residents ages 16 and older. Some activities include sports classes, crafts classes, as well as dance and music classes. The location also has a conference room.
