Formerly the nation's Capitol, the Maryland State House is the only state capitol building in the country with that distinction. It is also the oldest state capitol that has been used continuously for legislative purposes. In addition, each year from January to April, the general assembly meets in the Maryland State House for the legislative session, which lasts for 90 days.
The official name of the Annapolis Armory is the LTC (MD) E. Leslie Medford Armory. This red brick facility has a tank parked out front and is located just off West Street, visible from Route 50. The armory houses an Army National Guard recruiter office, where civilians can get information about serving the military on a part-time basis.

The Distric Court of Maryland was first established in 1971 as the result of an ammendment to the state constitution. It is fully funded by the state. Cases tried in the District Court include landlord-tenant disputes, motor vehicle violations, misdemeanors and, in some instances, felonies.

There are more than 30 fire stations in Anne Arundel County, and this fire station on Jennifer Road, next to the detention center and near Anne Arundel Medical Center, is home to Company 40. Its dedicated team of volunteer fire fighters responds to calls in the greater Annapolis area as well as the city and are frequently called in to assist surrounding departments.

Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks maintains local parks, trails and athletic fields, and offers a variety of programs for active youth and adults.
