The Solid Waste and Recycling Office is located in Stonington's town hall along with many of the town's other offices and departments. The transfer station is located on Greenhaven Road. The Solid Waste & Recycling Office oversees the town's mandatory recycling program, waste program and provides information on hazardous waste and what can and cannot be recycled.
The water pollution control authority operates and maintains the town's sewer treatment plant and collection system. The sewer service provided by the WCPA, which is paid for by those who use the sewer system. is similar to other utilities such as gas, water and electricity. The facility is operated by eight people, a superintendent, a chief operator, a business administrator, a lab technician and four operators.
The idyllic surroundings of Lake Katherine provide a natural oasis for many Palos area residents. A walking trail stretches around the entire lake and is used by many. Benches dot the trail for those looking to stop and reflect. Several botanic gardens featuring a variety of flowers and other plant life are must-see spots for children and adults alike. A small waterfall and wooden platform are frequent backdrops for wedding photos of area couples.
The nature center also offers a variety of youth programs aimed to spur interest in environmental and preservation issues. Various field trip programs are also offered to area schools. Lake Katherine Nature Center is currently operated as a non-profit charitable organization.
