St. Matthews church began its life as St Matthews mission in 1944 and the Diocese of St. Augustine purchased the present site of the church and school. Fr. Joseph Corde was assigned to be in charge. The first masses of St. Matthews mission were offered in the Lake Shore Theater and the American Legion Hall. Within two years the chapel at Camp Blanding was purchased, relocated to the present site of St. Matthews, and remodeled. The first masses offered on site were in April of 1949. In that same year St. Matthews Church was formally established as a parish with Fr. Corde as pastor. From 1950 to 1951 the Parish Hall (now kindergarten and lunch room), the first wing of the school, and the Convent, were all constructed. In 1953 Fr. Corde accepted a new assignment leaving behind six years of labor and accomplishment. Fr. Paul Manning arrived as our new pastor. Shortly thereafter a census was taken determining that the original frame of the church would not be able to accommodate the parish as St. Matthews flourished. By April of 1954, a campaign to raise $160, 000 to build a larger church was launched. Unfortunately, Fr. Manning was beset with ill health, and in February of 1955 transferred to St. Petersburg. Bishop Thomas McDonough, while remaining Pastor of St. Pauls in Jacksonville Beach, was appointed administrator to supervise the building of our present church. Ground was broken on Christmas day, 1955. The following Christmas, 1956, the new church was dedicated by Archbishop Hurley. In February of 1957, Fr. Daniel Hegarty was appointed pastor. Many new churches spun-off from St. Matthews in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Sacred Heart Parish and Most Holy Redeemer Parish were established from territory cut off from St. Matthews. As St. Matthews continued to grow a new rectory was constructed in 1968, followed by our gymnasium in 1973. In 1980 Monsignor Hegarty celebrated his 23rd year at St. Matthews, and his golden jubilee of ordination, he retired as pastor of St. Matthews. Monsignor John P. Burns was appointed the new Pastor in June of 1980. After his arrival, Msgr. Burns renovated the convent, installed 10 stained glass windows, and renovated the school. Bishop John Snyder dedicated and blessed the new windows in the church and the renovations of the school on the 35th anniversary of St. Matthews Church on November 18, 1984. In January 1994, Bishop Snyder dedicated the newly renovated church. In July 1994 Monsignor John P. Burns retired after 14 years of faithful service to the people of St. Matthews. Fr. Luke McLoughlin was appointed Pastor of St. Matthews in July 1994.

"Let us pray" are the words most visible to drivers as they race past the Good Shepherd Catholic Church entrance on Thomasville Road. These three words serve as a reminder that we are a people of prayer, first.Yes, we are the largest parish in the Catholic Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee, but more important, we are a representation of the Body of Christ, discerning Gods will in order to bring our lives into greater conformity with the Gospel of Jesus.A parish with humble beginnings preceding Interstate 10 and the population explosion of northeast Tallahassee Good Shepherd celebrated its 30th anniversary in January 2003.A now dynamic collection of more than 2, 500 families and a 15-acre campus, Good Shepherd is truly a "community of small communities, " centered in the Eucharist and committed to ministry. This vision emphasizes a prayerful focus on living the mission of Jesus through spiritual formation, evangelization and ministry carried out through small Christian communities.Nearly 75 different ministries are organized under five categories Leadership, Prayer and Liturgy, Fellowship and Evangelization, and Mercy and Justice.Good Shepherd is just as committed to youth and the Religious Education of both adults and children. Please spend some time exploring Good Shepherds online presence through this web site community and be sure to contact_us with your own news about parish.

MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church is a worshiping and welcoming parish community serving the Kingdom of God. We celebrate and live our faith in Jesus Christ through the Sacraments, and by our words and actions. BRIEF HISTORY Our Lady of Hope parish was started on September 13, 1981. The founding pastor was Father George Moreau. Masses were held at Carriage CoveMobile Park on Nova Road, Spruce Creek High School and Elementary School and daily Mass at the CWA hall near the church property. Everything was out of the trunk of the car. On Holy Thursday of 1983 we moved into the new hall, which served as the church as well as the parish hall. This building was erected with second collection monies. No fund drive was initiated at all. Due to the generosity of our parishioners this building was paid off and so was the rectory.

The very fact that you are taking time to include us in your search means a lot to us. In many of the passages of Scripture we read that Jesus passed by and those who became aware of his presence were attracted to him. In our case it seems to be a little like the reverse. It is you who are passing by. Strangers though we may be initially, we hope that our paths will not merely cross without getting to know each other a little more. We appreciate that you want to know something about us. Eventually, we would like to know what prompted you to pause and spend some time with us. But first we want to open the door and invite you in so that we may tell you a little about ourselves.
