Offering classes in Jamaica Plain since 1676, the Eliot School can not only teach you how to make your own furniture, you can learn how to upholster it, sew a quilt, make a matching rug and then photograph it all in your home.
The Eliot School is focused on the "manual arts" and preserving artforms such as woodworking, sewing and painting while offering students the chance to "satisfy their desire to create." Classes and workshops are offered daily and for all ages in a charming building from 1831 featuring a woodshop, sewing room and arts room.
Housed in a former fire house on Monmouth Street, the non-profit Brookline Community Arts Center offers a wide range of community art classes for adults, children and families. The center also organizes rotating exhibits of local and internationally renowned artists.
Free and reduced-cost classes are available for elderly residents and low-income children.

Stoughton Music Center supplies Stoughton musicians of all ages with musical instruments, supplies and lessons. Located on Washington Street next to Shear Images Hair Salon, Stoughton stock a good selection of instruments for sale including guitars, drums and keyboards. It can also special order an instrument for you. Supplies are in abundance here as well, including sheet music, guitar strings, cases and straps. Lessons are available, including house calls for Stoughton and nearby towns. Instrument repair can also be done here--please call for more information.
Opened in 1994, The Munroe Center for The Arts is a nonprofit organization operated by the Lexington Friends of the Arts. Its goal is to help promote arts education to residents of Lexington. Part of what it does is provide cheap rental space to several businesses that teach dance, music and art to local residents. Check out its Web site for a list of schools and studios offering classes. Donations are accepted.
