Established 37 years ago, the Animal Care League is an Oak Park-based not-for-profit animal shelter that provides lost and homeless pets with temporary medical attention and care.
All of the animals kept at the shelter are available for adoption. Those looking to adopt a furry new friend—the shelter is often populated with dogs, cats and rabbits—must meet a set of criteria, including age and residency requirements.
The Animal Care League also facilitates off-site adoptions, provides an affordable spay/neuter clinic, hosts obedience classes and supports a variety of pet-friendly local causes.
The North Shore is home to one of the oldest and largest animal shelters in the country. Orphans of the Storm, located on Riverwoods Road, is an oasis for stray and abandoned dogs and cats. The shelter's grounds are lush with vegetation, and the volunteers couldn't be more inviting and passionate about their work there. Unfortunately, these animals can't stay here forever. The shelter adopts out thousands of dogs and cats and is always looking to provide them with new loving homes.
Save-A-Pet is a national organization that has been saving animals since 1972. It has been in business in Grayslake since 1995. Save-A-Pet is a no-kill animal rescue that houses cats and dogs. It currently houses 300 cats and dogs that are all looking for loving homes.
On Angels' Wings opened in 2005 at the Crystal Lake location. It is a thrift store that sells used clothing, household wares and accessories and donates its proceeds to support animal causes.
Animals can become like children to us and there is nothing quite so sad as an unloved child. When cats and dogs are swept to the side there is at least one organization that comes to their aid. West Suburban Humane Society has become a one-stop shop for the love of an animal, be it canine or feline. Whether it be an irresistible baby or an adorable oldie, you can find an animal to help if you visit the West Suburban Humane Society. It's been around since 1972, they know what they are doing, do you? I hope it's going to the shelter and adopting your very own little kitty or pup.
Animal House is a "no kill" animal shelter that is open daily for adoptions. Cat adoptions are done in the free roam cat room. Dog adoptions are done with the assistance of an adoption counselor. Visitors are not allowed to do walk through viewings of the dogs due to the stress it creates.
Volunteers are accepted daily. As long as you are 16 or older (no exceptions please) you are welcome to come to the shelter any time between the hours of 11am-7pm everyday to volunteer. You will need to have a waiver signed by a parent if you are under the age of 18. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent at all times.
Animal House is a non-profit, 501(c)(3), no-kill shelter for all breeds of dogs and cats.
Since 1979, the Naperville Area Humane Society has been finding dogs and cats homes. Over the course of its existence, it is estimated that 28,000 animals have been adopted. The nonprofit group has many dogs and cats up for adoption, but aside from adoptions, it offers a variety of programs, including summer camps, humane education programs, a behavior helpline and adult education seminars. The humane society has about 400 registered volunteers but is always looking for more. The shelter accepts donations and regularly lists some of its needs on its outdoor sign. Fundraisers include the Putts for Pets Golf Outing and the Black Cat Ball.
