Hamden Plains United Methodist Church is approaching its bicentennial, having been a fixture in town for almost 200 years. Sybil Tuttle founded the church in December of 1813, with a congregation of seven. Today, parish members number more than 300. Initially the church was located down the street from its present spot, at the intersection of Circular Avenue and Church Street, but later moved down Church Street to the corner at Dixwell Avenue. Its first building burned down in 1918, but the parish rebuilt the majestic church that stands today.
