Located in Memphis, Tenn., Shelby County Fire Department provides protection services for the residents of the Shelby County in Tennessee. Established in 1972, the department provides emergency medical services, and protects the lives and property of people from fire, natural disasters and hazardous materials incidents. It prevents fire accidents through various prevention and education programs. The department operates with more than five engine companies, over 140 firefighters, inspectors and trainers. It has a wide variety of equipment, including pumper and ladder trucks, air and brush trucks, and special rescue and hazardous response equipment. Shelby County Fire Department is funded by a system of fire fees collected in the service areas. The fire department is operated by the Shelby County Government.
