Birmingham Metropolitan Planning Organization is responsible for comprehensive transportation planning in Jefferson and Shelby counties in Alabama. The committee is supported by a Transportation Technical Committee consisting of public and private administrators and transportation specialists. The MPO, located in Birmingham, Ala., is further supported by a Transportation Citizens Committee consisting of citizens representing the overall urban area. A full-time professional staff, provided by the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham, supports these committees. The MPO also publishes priorities for all transportation related projects for various types of modes, such as highways, transit, intermodal freight, bicycle, pedestrian and greenways.
