With her years of experience and success as both an operating leader and investor in medical device start-up companies like NxThera, Jan Garfinkle has a deep understanding of what it takes to build a successful business. When the inevitable challenges arise at NxThera, Jans knowledge and experience, together with her thoughtful and disciplined approach, helps us in developing and implementing practical and effective solutions. I appreciate the fact that Jan consistently challenges me to think big and know that I have the support necessary to help us achieve our goals. The majority of our portfolio companies are considered "early-stage, " where product or technology development and early adoption are the main objectives; however, we will also invest in both seed-stage ( demonstrating proof of principle ) and mid-stage ( entering full commercialization ) opportunities when they fit well with our investment criteria. We invest with the intent of supporting our companies throughout their life cycle across multiple financings. We are actively investing from our second fund and are seeking to invest approximately $5 to $7 million over the life of a company, with an initial investment ranging from $1 to $3 million. Our investment professionals have decades of experience within healthcare and entrepreneurial companies as a resource for our companies to draw upon. In addition, our advisory board is comprised of experts in the healthcare field; include the past and current CEOs of two of the largest medical device companies, Medtronic and Guidant. We have the resources and expertise to help our portfolio companies achieve success. We provide assistance to our portfolio companies by leveraging our relationships with industry leaders, academic centers of excellence, finance partners, and entrepreneurs.

The Kresge Foundation is an independent, private grantmaking organization. It was created in 1924 to promote the well-being of mankind. Its geographic scope is national and, on occasion, international. The foundations grants support a range of organizations reflecting almost the entire breadth of the nonprofit sector. These diverse groups respond by sustaining activities that demonstrate their effectiveness. Grants are awarded to institutions on a conditional or challenge basis, thereby providing an incentive to help them expand their fund raising capabilities, and are confined to established charitable institutions, without limitation as to field of interest or location. Foundation assistance is directed to the maintenance or expansion of those institutions rather than for programs or operating support. The foundation is temporarily located in Troy, Mich.
