Trinity United Church of Christ can trace its roots back to August 19, 1849, when Rev. George N. Smith, assisted by Rev. Peter Dougherty, served communion to four Native Americans and five Caucasions. They adopted the Faith and Covenant of Congregational Church ( St. Albans, Vermont ) the following October, but did not adopt the Constitution of the Congregational Society until March 12, 1861. Two years later, in February of 1863, First Congregational Church of Northport was formally organized. The church structure was built in 1869 at Trinitys present location and dedicated August 12, 1870. Northport Methodist Church was organized in 1858 by Rev. Lewis Griffin. The churchs cornerstone, dated May 1871, marked the churchs location on the northwest corner of Shabwasung and Main until 1971. The First Congregational Church of Northport and Northport Methodist Church merged October 6, 1965, forming Trinity United Church of Christ. In 1967 the Methodist church buildings were sold to Northport School. Its stained glass windows, however, were moved to Trinity Church in 1968, where they can still be enjoyed today. Nationally, United Church of Christ was founded in 1957, as the union of several Christian traditions who affirm that Christians do not always have to agree with one another to come together in communion. Our motto --- "that they may all be one" --- is Jesus prayer for the unity of the church.

About our Church The United Church of Christ of Newaygo was founded in 1855, a year after Newaygo was founded, as the Congregational Church of Newaygo. This was the first church in Newaygo with its own building, given land by the "Father of Newaygo" and a member of this church, Captain John Brooks. Burned out three times, the congregation was determined to stay and grow. In 1965 the present church building was built "up the hill." We have a long history in Newaygo and a deep commitment to be a voice of faith and an arm of action for Gods Kingdom causes in the community. Overview of the United Church of Christ The Congregational Churches were direct descendents of the Pilgrims and Puritans, the first European settlers in North America who came from the Anglican Church. Committed to uniting the Church as much as possible, the Congregationalists merged with the Christian Churches in 1931 to form the Congregational Christian Church. This denomination then merged again in 1957 with the Evangelical and Reformed Church to form the United Church of Christ. This church acknowledges as its sole Head, Jesus Christ, the Son of God and the Savior of all people. We acknowledge as brothers and sisters in Christ all who share in this confession. We look to the Word of God in the Scriptures and to the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, to prosper its creative and redemptive work in the world. We claim as our own the faith of the historic Church expressed in the ancient creeds and reclaimed in the basic insights of the Protestant Reformers. We affirm the responsibility of the Church in each generation to make this faith its own. One expression of this faith is the United Church of Christs Statement of Faith ( number 885 in the New Century hymnal ).

First Congregational Church is a diverse group of learning, growing, and serving Christians. We are empowered by the Holy Spirit to respond with faith in the Good News of Jesus Christ. Our desire is to love God in our worship, to love Gods people with our service, and in word and deed to share Gods love with all we meet. The word CONGREGATIONAL reveals a little more about who we are. If you celebrate Thanksgiving, you already know a little about Congregational Church. The congregational path began among the first Christian communities that were empowered by the Holy Spirit to carry on Jesus ministry as recorded in Acts 2. The Spirit also led Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John to tell and share the story of Gods grace in Jesus. But the distinctive roots of congregationalism emerged from the English adventurers who left the Old World to settle in America to escape religious oppression and to freely practice their faith. The founding of America is wrapped up with the desire to freely worship God. The congregational way confesses that Jesus Christ is head of the Church. Lots of things have changed over those many centuries, but if at Thanksgiving you gather with family and friends to give thanks to God for your blessings, and if you desire to share Gods blessings with others, then you can taste and see a little of the Congregational heritage. God gathers us for worship each week-end and empowers us by the Holy Spirit to go into the world to love others and to share the Good News of new life through faith in Jesus Christ. We follow God into the world to share this Good News in word and in deed, just as God shares his love and forgiveness with us and others in the words and deeds of Jesus. First Congregational Church is blessed with gifted musicians, traditional and contemporary, and a diverse fellowship of ages, races, and ethnic groups. Our contemporary Praise Teams lead us into Gods presence Saturday night at 6: 30 and Sunday morning at 10: 30. They will set your feet to taping and your soul will be drawn into the presence of God. Our traditional worship at 8: 30 and 10: 30 on Sundays features some of the finest organ, bell, and choral music in Northern Michigan. Whatever your age or stage, God is working through the ministries of FCC to help you find your way in your faith journey. Whether you are a beginner or have been walking with the Lord for many years, or recently retired or are looking for a church to nurture your children and youth into a deeper walk with God, we offer a variety of Bible studies, prayer experiences, sermon series, and worship services that will help you grow closer to God.
