Even though it may not technically be one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World (as many still believe), Niagara Falls is a magnificent attraction that spans two countries and has North America's oldest state park system welcoming more than 12 million visitors of all ages each year. While Niagara Falls itself is amazing to behold -- thanks to its water flowing at 100,000 cubic feet per second -- there are a multitude of other things to see and places to eat to ensure every member of the family has a thoroughly memorable experience. Walking is the primary method here, so make sure sturdy shoes are worn. Also keep in mind that while the falls are accessible all year long, some of the attractions are seasonal, as snow and ice keep them from functioning.

Parking and public transportation at Niagara Falls
Parking on the N.Y. side is easier and much cheaper than it is on the Canadian side, which can easily cost double to park in a public or private lot. There are four public lots on the U.S. side from which you can ride the Niagara Scenic Trolley system (especially beneficial for those whose mobility is limited, or for parents whose tired children just can't take another step). For those who do want to see the falls from the Ontario side, crossing the Rainbow Bridge by foot is relatively easy and inexpensive. Just make sure that you have proper documentation, as it's no longer acceptable to present a driver's license and birth certificate to prove citizenship: only a U.S. passport, NEXUS/FAST card, U.S. passport card, or enhanced driver's license will allow you to cross into Canada.

Best and worst time to go to Niagara Falls
Since many of the attractions are open from May through October because of weather, there are still those die-hard winter lovers who also like not having to battle the crowds brought about by the warmer months. If you're the traditional sort who prefers sunshine to snow, the best time to go is during the school year on weekdays. Once the weather warms up even a bit, Saturdays and Sundays are overrun with tourists from all over the globe.

Admission to Niagara Falls
Parks and surrounding view of the falls are free. Parking varies, but can be gotten on the cheap if you drive a bit into the city and seek out private lots. While there are a ton of activities that each involve a separate admission, the Niagara USA Discovery Pass lets you experience five of Niagara's most popular attractions (including the Cave of the Winds and Maid of the Mist) for one price, saving about 35%. And as a bonus, buying a pass lets you get one day of unlimited rides on the Trolley.

Must see/do in Niagara Falls
Some locals may sneer at the obvious tourist traps such as the Maid of the Mist and Cave of the Winds. However, these are popular for a good reason: you get an up-close look at the awesome power of all that rushing water. For those unafraid of heights, a 230-foot high observation tower provides a more complete view of the Falls and Niagara River and provides an excellent vantage point for photographs.

Other places to visit near Niagara Falls
For kids and animal lovers of all ages, the Aquarium of Niagara isn't far from the Niagara Falls State Park and displays more than 1,500 aquatic animals and over 40 exhibits. It's also open all year long, for those who visit in the colder months and want to take a break from the outdoors. Adults who enjoy Vegas-style entertainment will have a blast at the Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel, which has slots, blackjack, poker, live bands, and a wide variety of restaurants and shopping onsite. It's also close to the Falls - and parking here is free for patrons.

Insider tip for visitors to Niagara Falls
Because this is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, dining is plentiful, and can also be expensive. Places such as the Rainforest Cafe lure in those who want a relatively safe experience and don't mind overpaying. Driving just a few blocks into the city opens up an amazing number of eating establishments -- especially if you're partial to Indian or Italian, and some of the best doughnuts in the area -- and won't gobble up all of your cash.
