The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, known in Portland as OMSI, features five exhibit halls, eight hands-on science labs, an IMAX theater, planetarium and even a submarine. OMSI has more than 200 interactive exhibits and labs that appeal to kids of all ages on topics including the earth, technology and human life. The museum contains a "science playground" aimed at kids ages six and under that allows them to explore science in an age-appropriate manner. OMSI also contains two choices for food — a basic cafe and a more upscale restaurant, Theory Eatery.
Best and worst times to go to OMSI
On rainy days — and Portland has a lot of them — OMSI can be quite crowded. If you are looking for a quieter time, try coming when it's sunny, or within an hour of the museum opening. Peak visitor time seems to be from around 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Must see/do at OMSI
For younger kids, definitely check out the science playground. Kids under six can explore the sandpit, water features, building area, and activity stations. A special area padded with mats at the back of the room provides a safe and stimulating area for infants. Older kids will love the earthquake simulation and using air to move balls in the Turbine Hall; exploring how life begins in Life Hall; and conducting experiments in Science Labs. You can also check out a movie in the four-story-tall Empirical Theater.
Admission to OMSI
Adult admission is between $10 and $15, while admission for kids ages 3-13 and adults 63 and up is around $10. Children under three are free. An additional charge is required for parking and for admission to the submarine, IMAX theater, planetarium and laser light shows.
Parking and public transportation to OMSI
OMSI has two large parking lots located north and southeast of the museum off Water Avenue. Parking is an additional fee. It is also accessible by the new Light Rail system via the OMSI/SE Water Ave stop. A number of bus stops are within walking distance of OMSI, and can be found using the Trimet website.
Food at OMSI
For a quick bite to eat, stop at the Theater Cafe. The cafe offers juice, pastries, sandwiches and light snacks. Most options are in the $2-7 range. A full espresso menu is also available. Theory Eatery is more upscale, with seasonal choices along with the more tried-and-true grilled cheese. Most options are in the $5-10 range.
Insider tip for visitors to OMSI
The first Sunday of every month visitors receive discounted $2 general admission to OMSI. Adults should check out OMSI After Dark on the last Wednesday of the month, when adults (21 and up) can explore the museum without kids around. Before you leave the area, be sure to check out The Oregon Rail Heritage Center, which houses three locomotives that kids can climb on and explore.
