The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides patient care and federal benefits to veterans and their dependents. Established as an independent agency under the President by Executive Order 5398 in 1930, it was elevated to Cabinet level in 1989. The department administers medical care and social support programs for military veterans, their families and survivors. The Department of Veterans Affairs employs various physicians, nurses, counselors, statisticians, architects, computer specialists and attorneys. It serves through a network of more than 150 hospitals, over 800 outpatient clinics, nearly 100 nursing homes and approximately 40 residential rehabilitation treatment programs. The department also operates readjustment counseling centers, veterans benefits regional offices and national cemeteries.
