The Alaska Department of Fish & Game Commercial Fisheries Division works to protect, maintain and improve the fish, shellfish and aquatic plant resources of Alaska. It provides stock assessment and applied research, harvest management, aquaculture permitting, data processing and public participation services. The division also offers laboratory and information services. The Alaska Department of Fish & Game Commercial Fisheries Division maintains ongoing programs for the enumeration, understanding and assessment of salmon, herring, groundfish and shellfish stock. It operates laboratories for genetic identification, fish pathology, and ageing and tagging research activities. The division permits and provides regulatory, technical and planning services to aquatic farmers and private, nonprofit hatchery operators.
