The Minnesota Air National Guard is comprised of the state headquarters and two flying wings: the 133rd Airlift Wing, located at the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport, and the 148th Fighter Wing, located in Duluth, Minn. The 148th flies the F16C fighter jet in general purpose missions. The unit has won a number of awards, including the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award in 1979, 1988 and 1999. Of the statewide strength of 2,500 Air Guard personnel, approximately 1,000 people are members of the 148th Fighter Wing, making it one of Duluth s largest employers. There are more than 140 Air Guard units throughout the U.S. and its territories. While missions vary from unit to unit, some interesting ones include pararescue missions, modular airborne firefighting support, combat communications and air traffic control.

Department of Military Affairs is the state of Minnesota government department that oversees the state s National Guard that has more than 15,000 employees who offer public protection, natural disasters and civil emergencies management services. It provides assistance with state and local law enforcement during peacetime. The department offers war training and deploys Minnesota National Guard members on various peace operations in more than 30 countries worldwide. It is responsible for managing a range of guard construction, facilities improvement and maintenance programs. Department of Military Affairs maintains the Camp Ripley, which is an over 50,000-acre military training center that works to meet the needs of military communities and state agencies. It maintains one of its facilities in Little Falls, Minn.

Home to nearly 200 National Guardsmen of the 34th Red Bull Infantry Division, the Minnesota National Guard Armory in Inver Grove Heights is connected to the Veterans Memorial Community Center. Though the building is primarily reserved for National Guard use, the city hosts some classes and activities in the facility's gym and classroom.
