The Newport News Department of Development is responsible for expanding the citys tax base by drawing new businesses and industries. It also creates new jobs, retaining existing jobs and helping existing businesses to expand. The department assists businesses in all phases of the site selection process and administers the Citys Enterprise Zone and the Commercial Rehabilitation Real Estate Property Tax Abatement Programs, besides managing several low-interest business loan programs. The Newport News Department of Development also provides assistance to local businesses to obtain federal HUBZone certification. The Department manages the Citys Seafood Industrial Park, as well as several business and industrial parks apart form operating an active business visitation program to assist existing businesses in the city.
