Founded in 1869, the YMCA of Honolulu is one of the largest providers of school-age child care services in Hawaii. It works in partnership with the Department of Education to provide after-school programs for nearly 7,000 children in kindergarten through grade six. The organization employs more than 40 full-time substance abuse counselors who serve over 25 public schools throughout Hawaii. The YMCA of Honolulu offers a 12-week weight management program that focuses on the areas of exercise, nutrition and healthy eating habits.
