Childrens Aid Society, established in 1912, assists parents with the skills and resources they need to keep families together. The organization provides assistance to pregnant young girls and parenting young mothers in preparing for improved parenting of their children, and support and guidance in returning to school and gaining employment. Birmingham Metropolitan Planning Organization is responsible for comprehensive transportation planning in Jefferson and Shelby counties in Alabama. The committee is supported by a Transportation Technical Committee consisting of public and private administrators and transportation specialists. The MPO, located in Birmingham, Ala., is further supported by a Transportation Citizens Committee consisting of citizens representing the overall urban area. A full-time professional staff, provided by the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham, supports these committees. The MPO also publishes priorities for all transportation related projects for various types of modes, such as highways, transit, intermodal freight, bicycle, pedestrian and greenways.

Jefferson County Department of Health, located in Birmingham, Ala., is a full-service public health care center. Formerly known as Alabama Department of Health, it has been operational for more than 55 years. The department offers a wide variety of adult and children health services, and general medical practices, including free pap tests and breast examinations, breast and cervical cancer control programs, blood pressure screening, diabetes education classes, nutrition counseling, and flu shots and other immunizations. Southeastern Diabetes Education Services has been providing children with diabetes fun-filled educational programs since its founding in 1949. Located at Birmingham, Ala., the group teaches children a list of diabetes management techniques during daily education seminars and other recreational activities. It also conducts numerous junior, senior and adventure camps which include Camp Seale Harris and Camp Sugar Falls, among other educational programs.
