Childrens Aid Society, established in 1912, assists parents with the skills and resources they need to keep families together. The organization provides assistance to pregnant young girls and parenting young mothers in preparing for improved parenting of their children, and support and guidance in returning to school and gaining employment. Its Project Dads teaches responsibility sharing to at-risk adolescent males and teen fathers with an emphasis on decision-making skills, conflict resolution and anger management. The organization offers home study and post-placement supervision services to families who wish to adopt children independently. Childrens Aid Society is a charter member of the United Way of Central Alabama, a founding member of the Child Welfare League of America, and is accredited by the Council on Accreditation. Birmingham Metropolitan Planning Organization is responsible for comprehensive transportation planning in Jefferson and Shelby counties in Alabama. The committee is supported by a Transportation Technical Committee consisting of public and private administrators and transportation specialists. The MPO, located in Birmingham, Ala., is further supported by a Transportation Citizens Committee consisting of citizens representing the overall urban area. A full-time professional staff, provided by the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham, supports these committees. The MPO also publishes priorities for all transportation related projects for various types of modes, such as highways, transit, intermodal freight, bicycle, pedestrian and greenways.
