Alexandria Shoe Repair & Leather Service is a uniquely Old Town blend of business and history. The shop has been run by successive generations of Steubes since its founding in 1896, giving it claim to being the oldest continually operated shoe repair business in Virginia. On display are reminders of bygone days, including the founder's original hammers and some of the shoes he worked on; still in use are an 85-year-old long-line finisher and an antique Singer sewing machine. Owner Barbara Steube says her great-great grandfather made customer service his trademark, advising "Whatever you do, do it well, even if it is one job a day," a tradition that continues today at Alexandria Shoe Repair & Leather Service.
