Founded in 1764 as the College of Rhode Island in Warren, R.I., Brown University is a private university that serves more than 7,500 students. The university includes an undergraduate college and graduate and medical schools that offer over 100 programs. It operates a library system that provides nearly 6 million items, including bound volumes, periodicals, maps, sheet music and manuscripts. In addition, Brown University s library system offers computers and Wi-Fi Internet access. The university also has the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology, which houses approximately 100,000 artifacts from North America, Asia, Africa and the South Pacific. It receives funds for research from various organizations that include the Department of Health and Human Services, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense and Energy, NASA, the Department of Education, and several private, corporate and nonprofit organizations.
