San Anselmo Montessori, located at the old Red Hill Middle School site behind Red Hill Shopping Center, provides preschool and Kindergarten Montessori programs, along with after-school and summer programs.

Montessori philosophy allows children to learn at their own pace and explore the world around them. The goal is for kids to become independently interested in learning on their own.

The school also features an organic garden and brings in special instructors, like storytellers and music teachers. The Kindergarten class also takes field trips to places like the Planetarium and Slide Ranch.

Tuition is around $10,000 a year, and there is a discount for siblings. The application process includes a meeting with the student.

The Ross Valley School District covers three elementary schools and one middle school serving San Anselmo and Fairfax. The district enrolled 1,973 students for the 2009-10 year at Manor Elementary School in Fairfax, Wade Thomas Elementary and Brookside Elementary in San Anselmo, and White Hill Middle School at the west end of Fairfax. Currently, the district is undergoing change with the hiring of a new Superintendent and with a proposed bond measure on the November 2010 ballot. The bond measure is part of an effort to address enrollment growth with a plan to add additional classrooms to the elementary schools and expand the facilities at White Hill. In addition, Brookside, which is currently divided into two campuses for grades K-2 and grades 3-5, will become two K-5 elementary schools in the 2011-12 school year. The district board of trustees meets the first and third Thursday of the month at 6pm at the district offices on Shaw Drive, behind the Red Hill Shopping Center.
