Towson University's radio station markets itself as "radio for music people," and with 70,000 listeners on average each week, that's a lot of music people.
Towson has had a radio station on campus since the 1980s, playing everything from classical to smooth jazz, but in 2003 the station was relaunched and renamed with a new mission. The station's format, what the music industry calls "adult album alternative," blends an eclectic playlist that in a day can range from Bruce Springsteen to Blues Traveler. The station also runs national programs such as "World Cafe," "eTown" and "The Grateful Dead Hour."
WTMD prides itself on playing Baltimore bands. Local artists are mainstays in its playlist and on its flagship weekly program, "Baltimore Unsigned." In 2009, the station launched an HD2 "Baltimore Channel."
The station also lends its airtime to Towson's athletic department, which produces broadcasts of key Towson sporting events.
