Cal's newest and smallest school was founded in 1994 to provide a multidisciplinary approach to developing, safeguarding and expanding access to information. Its 100 grad students and 15 faculty members are headquartered in the oldest building in the entire UC system, South Hall, which was built in 1873 and has been lovingly restored. The school also offers undergraduate courses, including "Web Architecture and Information Management," "The Politics of Piracy" and "Information Law." Alumni work in human computer interaction and usability testing, project management, document engineering, Web services, information architecture, database management and design, mobile software development, and library and information services. The I-school is rooted in Cal's school of librarianship, later renamed the School of Information Management and Systems, which was housed in South Hall for many years.
