With a specialization in accommodating special needs children, A Bright Start Child Development Center works with Hillsborough's public schools regarding the special needs children at the center. While the center works with special needs students and regular students, both groups receive the same curriculum and activities, though the presentation can vary depending on age. The school's curriculum includes sciences, physical education, basic math skills, reading skills, and social skills for infants, preschoolers, pre kindergarteners, and kindergarteners. Originally fonded in 1752 by Dutch settlers, Neshanic Reformed Church is the oldest church building still in use as a house of worship. 

Led by Rev. David Hill, the parish is a member of the Reformed Church in America and offers religious education for children and teenagers, adult bible study, youth groups, praise band, vocal choirs for adults and children, prayer group, vacation bible school, an on-site Christian preschool and more. 

The church offers religious education for children and teenagers, adult Bible study, youth groups, music programs and an on-site religious preschool.

Service opportunities include a summer mission program, involvement with the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program, Somerset Home for Temporarily Displaced Children, Church World Service and Hillsborough Food Bank.

Woods Road Elementary School, one of the district's six elementary schools, houses grades kindergarten through four.

The school also has a preschool class for special needs students, and a transitional primary class for students who finished kindergarten but are not ready for first grade.

Students focus on language arts including reading, writing, spelling and handwriting, math, science, social students, physical education, health, music, art and foreign languages while at the school.

In addition, the school has spirit Fridays on the first and third Friday of the month, when students and staff show their school pride. The school emphasizes six character education traits during each month, with the month's lesson culminating in a school-wide assembly to acknowledge how each class embodied the month's trait.

Community outreach projects are a pillar for the school as well. Students have supported the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program and conducted book and clothing drives. Annual school celebrations include Read Across America Day, Young Author's Day, Field Day, and the school's science fair.

Principal Jodi Howe leads the school, and the mascot is Striker the Wildcat.

Though several expansions have been added to the South Branch Reformed Church building, its congregation still meets in the original 1850 building. Led by the Reverend Stephen Eckert, mass occurs once a week with a fellowship coffee following the mass. Sunday school classes meet following the masses and all children are welcome to attend. Childcare is also provided.

The church offers a preschool for children ages three to five during the week. An adult choir, a choir for 3-year-olds to first graders, known as its Angel Choir, a junior choir for second through ninth grade students and a senior choir for students in tenth grade and older accompany masses. In addition, it offers a handbell choir for fourth graders and older children. Its youth groups encompass middle and high school-aged students and the church has groups for Bible studies and social meetings.

A Childs Place, located at 302 South Branch Road, offers classes for students ranging from six weeks to 12 years of age.

Classrooms are filled with a variety of intriguing materials in an effort to lead each student to explore, understand and grow into the world around them.

Offering classes which occur two, three or five days per week, and staying open from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. makes A Child's Place very flexible for busy parents.

The Alef Beit Sefer Early Childhood Center of Temple Beth-El is a Jewish preschool located in Hillsborough. A non-sectarian program licensed by the State of New Jersey Department of Human Services and Division of Youth and Family Services, Alef Beit Sefer Early Childhood Center offers preschool, kindergarten and before and afters school extended care to children ages two through six. The center's facilities include ten classrooms, outdoor play area and an indoor multipurpose room. Aiming to "enhance the social, emotional, physical, cognitive and spiritual growth of each child," the center integrates a Jewish and secular curriculum for each age group. Parents have the opportunity to participate in the educational community through parent association committees and family programming. Its program runs from September through June with a summer camp in July and August.

Featuring a curriculum written by the school's Educational Director, Maggie Buley, the Stellar Academy has students switching classrooms to learn different subjects during the day. Subjects include language and literacy skills, science skills, math and logic skills, music skills, social skills, and physical education skills. Sessions in each subject—which the school divides into zones—begin with a lesson and an activity reinforcing the lesson follows. Free play ends the session, and students move to the next zone. The school meets year-round and provides some scholarships for students.
