For almost a half century, St. Stephen's School has educated students in the Roman Catholic tradition.
Beginning as a first- through third-grade school, St. Stephen's gradually expanded to includes grades kindergarten through eighth grade and also offers a preschool.
Students of all faiths are welcome and tuition assistance is available. The school also offers a variety of after-school programs, including sports teams and clubs.

Alphabet Academy North Campus is located in the former Colonial Tymes Restaurant just off Dixwell Ave. The school provides a nurturing environment for kids ages 12 months to 6 years old. Programs are founded on a child-driven curriculum, which is taken from the enrolled children’s interests, ideas and experiences. It has an additional location in Hamden as well.
Serving children from 3 months to 5 years old, Mishkan Israel Nursery School specializes in socialization skills and offers a wide variety of programs such as Spanish, karate, Make a Mess, dramatics, dance and science. Children of all faiths are welcome.

The Smart Start Preschool & Learning Center ensures a safe and positive learning environment for young children ages 3 and up. The center focuses on enhancing the physical, emotional, social and cognitive growth of children. It offers a preschool program and a school-age program, along with individualized tutoring services. The school's learning philosophy includes fun games, hands-on-activities, small group instruction, technology and community involvement. All staff members are certified and the program is based on the core curriculum of Connecticut Guidelines for preschool education. The Smart Start Preschool & Learning Center offers gym and art classes, weekly music sessions, field trips, puzzles, homework help and much more.
Alice Peck School now houses a comprehensive pre-school program. After Alice Peck closed in 2006 due to low enrollment numbers, the Board of Education decided that the YMCA daycare program would relocate to the Hillfield Road building after the YMCA encountered problems administering the program there. In 2007, the YMCA arranged with the town to lease the building and has arrangements with the school board to provide before- and after-school care for students.
St. Rita School was founded in 1956 as a school for students in grades one through four. Within three years that expanded to grade six, and by 1961 it was educating students through eighth grade. Several orders of religious sisters have taught at the school, including the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, the Dominican Sisters from Columbus, Ohio and most recently the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The school has grown as the needs of its students have grown, and it now sports a computer lab, a science lab and a renovated library and media center. Before- and after-school care also is offered at the school.

Sunshine Preschool has been providing child care and preschool services since before 1995. The school offers a variety of programs for infants, toddlers and preschoolers.
Sacred Heart Manor Nursery and Kindergarten is located on the Mount Sacred Heart campus, which includes Sacred Heart Academy, Sacred Heart Manor and the Motherhouse of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Both religious and lay people staff the school, which promotes the development of children both academically and socially, helping to grow emotionally and spiritually. The school offers nursery, preschool and kindergarten programs with four classrooms in addition to a playroom. Two, three and five-day-a-week plans are available.
