Officials within the Oak Park Police Department say its commitment to community policing "isn't just a title or philosophy."
Instead, Deputy Chief Anthony Ambrose says, community policing is practiced by everyone in the department, from patrolmen to detectives. That means a group of the village's 116 sworn officers are covering portions of Oak Park at any given time, with an eye toward preventing, and reacting to, crime and promoting public safety.
To that end, the department assigns several officers to work from their homes, situated within their beats. The goal is to open the lines of communication between the department and Oak Park's neighborhoods.
Oak Park police have a street-crimes unit, traffic-enforcement unit and juvenile unit. They also dedicate officers to the West Suburban Directed Gang Enforcement, a regional crimefighting effort made up of officers in Forest Park, River Forest, Brookfield, Lyons, Riverside, Stickney, North Riverside and Berwyn.
Additional numbers for the department include a Crime Tip Hotline at 708-434-1636 and a non-emergency number at 708-386-2131.
The Winnetka Police Department is just around the corner from Village Hall and neighbors the fire department. The department has 28 sworn officers and 10 non-sworn officers. The Winnetka Police Department offers alerts to residents using the CodeRED notification service. For more information on the program, contact the police department non-emergency line.
The Grayslake Police Department is a community-focused department that ensures the safety and welfare of local residents and businesses. The department is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), a recognition that fewer than 60 departments statewide have achieved. The 35 officers and six civilian employees aim to respond quickly and effectively to community issues. The department moved into a new, state-of-the-art facility on July 1, 2008. It is attached to the Grayslake Village Hall.
The United City of Yorkville Police Dept., led by Chief Richard Hart, employs about two dozen full-time officers. In addition to patrolling, the department provides child safety seat inspections, a disposal program for unused medications, vacation watches and a Citizens Police Academy. It also participates in Crimestoppers and Kendall County TRIAD, which serves senior citizens.
